Mrs. Bernadine M. Kowalski

Lorain- Bernadine M. (nee: Hilenski) Kowalski, 91, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016 at her daughter's home in Lorain, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on March 28, 1925 in Lorain, OH where she was a lifelong resident. Bernie graduated Lorain High School, Class of 1943. She married her beloved Stan Kowalski on January 18, 1947 and they raised three children together. Bernie returned to school receiving her LPN from St. Joseph Hospital and an Associate Degree in Nursing from LCCC. She was employed as a registered nurse at Lorain Community Hospital for 43 years before retiring. Bernie was a member of St. Peter Parish and St. Peter's Senior Club. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, baking, watching the Cleveland Indians, traveling with her husband and family and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Noreen (Peter) Bitz, Tom (Karen) Kowalski and Marcy (Rod) MacKay; grandchildren, Kristine, Douglas, Mathew, Brian and Andrew; great grandchildren, Kellie, Keith, Madeline, Lukas, Zachary and Aiden; sister, Bea Popovich; brother, Larry (Dorothy) Hilenski; brother-in-law, Donald Kowalski; sister-in-law, Jeannette (Gordon) Swartz and Jeanne Kowalski; and dear friend, Fran Cummings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Esther Hilenski; and beloved husband of 68 years, Stanley Kowalski.

Bernie's family would like to thank New Life Hospice, her nurse, Devonia and aides for their compassionate and loving care.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Monday, April 11, 2016 from 4:00 -7:00 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:20 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, Fr. Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor, officiating with Deacon Robert J. Dybo assisting. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
