Mr. Herbert J. Jacoby

Former Lorain County Commissioner, Herbert Joseph Jacoby, (84) died peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family on September 30th, 2012 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain. He was born March 30, 1928 in Lorain, Ohio.

As Commissioner from 1985 to 1997, his legacy, he fought to "resurrect Lorain" -the City he was born and raised in, the City he loved.  Mr. Jacoby deemed Lorain a "diamond in the rough" and envisioned bringing businesses into the County. He worked to promote and support local businesses. He was a man ahead of his time.  Among his many successes as Commissioner, Herb was responsible for implementing Lorain's 911 emergency call program.

Herb was Lorain County's Chief Tax Appraiser for twenty years as well as a part-time professor at Lorain County Community College. His first job in Lorain was a crew dispatcher for Lake Terminal Railroad. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1949. He was loved and respected by his students, peers, colleagues, children, and all who knew him. He was a fighting Irishman who was made an honorary member of the IAV.

Herb is survived by his precious wife, Mary (nee: D'Orazio) of 63 years; and their six children, John, Herb (Cindy), Jean (Vlada), Joan (Rick) Trice, Suellen (David) Purdum, and James (Janet); 18 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Margaret (nee: O'Donnell) Jacoby; his brothers, Jack and Phillip; and sisters, Rosemary (Al) Farace and Patricia (John) Maiden.

He was a man without duplicity who had great integrity, strength, and courage. He was articulate - loved music - loved life. Herb lived well and died well - peacefully, lovingly timing things as such that his family would be together October 1st for their wedding anniversary.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Thursday, October 4, 2012 from 3-8 PM.
